How Do Athletes Manage Migraine?

When you're an athlete, migraine can stop you in your tracks. Whether you're a pro baseball player or a weekend pickleball warrior, you need a migraine treatment you can rely on - and that doesn't have side effects that make you feel even worse. Let's look at some key ways athletes manage migraine so they can stay in the game.

Migraine management for athletes

  • Adapt your workout routine. Exercise can benefit migraine, but it can also be a trigger. It’s tough to stay in peak condition without pushing yourself too hard! Some adaptations may include: long warm-ups and cool-downs, slower movements, minimizing head movement, lifting lighter weights, and avoiding exercise in hot weather.
  • Follow a life routine, too. Keeping a consistent schedule is a powerful way to prevent migraine. Get up and go to bed at the same time every day. Don’t skip meals. Do a CEFALY PREVENT treatment every evening.
  • Allow yourself to rest. Are you one of those “every day is leg day,” “go hard or go home” athletes? It may be time to change your perspective. Rest days and good sleep will not only help prevent migraine, but can help your muscles recover and prevent injury as well.
  • Tome agua. Athletes need to pay extra attention to their fluid intake. Don’t just chug water after a tough practice; stay hydrated all day long, and add electrolytes as well.
  • Pay attention to your emotional state. The number-one migraine trigger is stress. That’s bad news if you tend to get worked up about upcoming competitions or events! While you can’t eliminate stress from your life, you can learn to manage it with proven techniques like deep breathing and meditation.
  • Track everything. Just as keeping a workout diary or fitness journal can help improve your athletic performance, tracking your migraine patterns allows you to identify triggers and recognize patterns. Download the CeCe Migraine Management app: an intuitive migraine journal that also gives you the power to control your CEFALY device.
  • Commit to a daily PREVENT treatment. Just as it takes many gym sessions to build muscle, it takes consistent use of CEFALY’s PREVENT mode to make your trigeminal nerve less sensitive. To reduce the frequency of migraine attacks, use the 20-minute PREVENT setting every day.
